Recently I had a massive attack of spring fever. I ripped apart all my drawers, shoes, closet, even my makeup collection and totally cleaned house. It inspired me to put together a post of ways to get going on spring cleaning, and prepping your wardrobe for the new seasons…
The first step in clearing out your closet for spring is to get rid of anything you haven’t worn in years. I know, we all think ‘but I’ll wear this that one time I need it,’ but that time rarely comes. I found the best way to make those tough decisions on letting pieces go that you have held on to for so long is to step back, look at it and ask yourself ‘If I were shopping right now, would I buy this?‘. If you would, then keep it around a little longer… but if the answer is no — it’s goodbye.
The next question you need to ask yourself is ‘Would someone else buy this in its current condition?‘. If the answer is yes, then start a pile of clothes that you can bring to your local consignment shop. This can give you some extra cash to stock up on new spring pieces! Also if there are items that they pass on, you can drop them off at a clothing donation.
If you don’t want to take your clothes to a consignment shop, try throwing a swap party. Invite some of your girlfriends over, tell them to bring any jewelry, handbags, clothing or shoes they want to swap. Make some snacks, have some beverages and let the swapping begin! This is a great way for everyone to switch up their closets without spending a dime!
If you’re not blessed with an amazing walk-in organized closet, there are always closet organizers. You can find these relatively cheap at your local Target or Wal-Mart. This is just going to help you divide your clothing into sections so it is easier to find exactly what you’re looking for.
Once you have the closet organized by category, then organize it by color. When it is color coordinated, it is actually easier for your eyes to look through everything and not miss something as opposed to when all the colors are mixed together. If your closet is organized by category and color, the process of picking out an outfit will be so much quicker.
